Australian Women Talk about Sex PDF Print
Monday, 30 June 2008 02:57

Setting out to investigate the sex lives of women is a daunting task but it ultimately provides insights that may be culturally significant within certain countries,as well as confirming the commonality of sexual behavior around the world.

To be released on 1 July (Australia), The Sex Lives of Australian Women is based on the results gathered from an online survey. Author Joan Sauers received almost 2000 responses to her online survey, and its results confirm general concerns and trends that do appear in other nations. Take the typical home made sex video. According to the book, one in five women have starred in their own sexy video and according to Sauers’ online survey, many regret it.

Other interesting statistics include:

  • 45 per cent of women say they reach orgasm most of the time during some kind of sexual activity.
  • 40 per cent say they achieve it through solo sex.
  • 72 per cent of women say they think changing hormone levels affect their interest in having sex. One 20-year-old receptionist from Western Australia described her condition just before that time of the month as PMH – or "pre-menstrual horniness".
  • The survey found the main reason women are put off having sex is because they are too tired from their careers, looking after their children and doing most of the housework. One 35-year-old student and mother from Queensland put it this way: "I find it difficult to make my husband understand that if he expects me to pick up after him all day and cook his dinner and do everything for him, then by the time I hop into bed I feel more like his mother than his lover."
  • One out of five women have had an affair.
  • One out of five women have filmed themselves.
  • One out of four women look at pornography at least once a month and 22 per cent have had a sexual experience with another woman.
The Sex Lives of Australian Women is published by Random House (Ebury Imprint) and, like many similar books, is ideal for any one interested in sexual behavior.
