The first book in Sarah McCarty’s Wild series is actually three interlocking tales in one. If you are into alpha males with wolfish charm you are going to love this trio of stories about dominant werewolves (two brothers and their cousin) and the three stubborn and unbelieving sisters they fall in love with. McCarty weaves a fascinating paranormal tale with a new version of the werewolf male that is highly erotic and extremely protective.
The first story centers on Donovan and Lisa. It opens in a bar where Donovan is having a drink with his cousin Wyatt, who happens to be the town sheriff. Lisa storms in madder than hell and determined. A man has done something to anger her and she’s there to have her revenge. Donovan is at first intrigued then compelled to help as something about Lisa gets him all worked up. The tale is fast paced and highly erotic. Lisa literally gets swept off her feet by the walking sex god Donovan. While he pushes her to accept his dominant ways her stubbornness refuses to let her become subservient, except in bed where she uses it to her advantage and enjoys his strength and skill.
Even though Lisa is enjoying her steamy affair with Donovan she worries about her younger sister, Robin. She is the reason Lisa stormed into that bar. The town jerk had hurt Lisa’s fragile and ill sister. Donovan struggles to comfort Lisa in her worries and protect both the women from the danger of retaliation from Buddy, the town jerk that hurt Robin. After all Donovan is a Protector, that’s what he does, but this may be too much to handle on his own after his cousin Wyatt leaves to return to their pack as Alpha Rising. Enter Donovan’s twin brother, Kelon. The second story focuses on Kelon and Robin. Kelon is a little wilder and rougher around the edges than Donovan but boy can he cook. Kelon storms into the inn Lisa and her sisters are about to open and pretty much takes over the place. His overbearing nature scares Robin but at the same excites her in a way she’s never known. He instantly recognizes her for what she is to him yet she feels he’s only taking pity on her and paying attention to the poor little sick girl because his brother asked him to. Robin wants magic and Kelon is determined to give it to her while at the same time protecting her from Buddy’s threats and the threat of an unknown watcher that Kelon discovers in the woods. Just when things seem to be getting a little better the guys realize Wyatt needs their help back at the pack and Robin and Lisa’s older sister, Heather, shows up at the inn. Heather refuses to believe these men are werewolves and they don’t have time to convince her before packing everyone up and hauling them to the pack, where there is bound to be trouble because their pack forbids mating with humans. The third story focuses on Heather and Wyatt. She’s instantly drawn to his powerful beauty and charming personality. She finds herself thinking things she hasn’t bothered with in a long time, things that make her blush whenever she looks at him. Wyatt knows he’s done for. Not only does he have to fight for his Alpha status with challenge after challenge now he has to deal with a human he’s falling for fast. It couldn’t come at a worse time but perhaps it’s not so bad. Heather may be exactly what he needs to get him through the challenges. Sarah McCarty definitely takes you on a wild ride in the first three novellas of this series. Fast paced storylines with super hot sex scenes make this a steamy read. I really would have liked a little more depth to the story and characters. It is all there on the surface, a great plot, great and very sexy characters but I was left feeling a little empty I guess. I wanted more. I am a reader that likes full disclosure. I don’t like to be left hanging, wondering why, or feeling that something wasn’t fully explained. Unless I know it will be taken care of in an upcoming book. McCarty tied up her loose ends and left us with a happy ending, I just instinctively feel there should have been more to the story. Perhaps in the next book, Wild Instinct, due out in July 2009 we’ll learn more about the wolf pack and where things are left with Buddy still being in town. All in all it was a very enjoyable read, entertaining and passionate. Donovan and Kelon are sexier than hell, and Wyatt is a true Alpha with strength, compassion and sex appeal to spare. And if you don’t mind your men having serious animal instincts and the ability to become furry, this book is for you.
